Durangoko Azoka · Basque Book and Record Fair

Durangoko Azoka (‘the Durango fair’) is the big annual showcase for creative work in Basque (euskara). The 61st edition takes place from 4 to 8 December 2026 in Durango, in Biscay (Bizkaia). It is organised by the Gerediaga Elkartea association.

A fair born in 1965

The fair was founded in 1965 by Gerediaga Elkartea to support writing and music in the Basque language, at the height of the Franco dictatorship. The first edition brought together 19 exhibitors under the porch of Santa María church, on All Saints’ Day.

• 1965–1973: under the church porch (except in 1967)
• 1974–1996: in the market square; this is when the fair moved to early December
• Since 2003: at Landako Gunea, the town’s multi-purpose venue

What you’ll find

• Hundreds of stands run by publishers, record labels and cultural associations
• The year’s new releases in Basque books and records. Many authors and musicians come to present their work and meet the public.
• Themed spaces that have appeared over the years:
  • Saguganbara for children (up to age 12)
  • Ahotsenea for concerts and talks (since 2008)
  • Irudienea and Szenatokia for audiovisual and performing arts (2010)
  • Kabi@ for digital culture (2012)
• Evening concerts, after the stands have closed
