An online magazine for the seven provinces

Euskal Herria — the seven as one. On both sides of the Pyrenees, from Bilbao to Bayonne, from the Bardenas to the beaches of La Concha, a country without borders, seen through an independent editorial eye.

The mission

A travel site devoted to Euskal Herria, the historic Basque Country in its entirety — 7 provinces, 2 countries, 5 languages. Three articles a week on food, nature, culture, routes, festivals, artisans, villages and towns.

The aim: to become the go-to online reference for discovering the Basque Country differently, without the usual administrative lens (Basque Autonomous Community / Navarre / French Basque Country) that breaks up what has historically been a single linguistic and cultural territory.

Five languages, not four

The site is live in five languages: euskara, français, español, English and Deutsch. Euskara is given pride of place in recognition of its status as an indigenous language. German is included because German-speaking tourists make up a growing share of visitors to the Basque coast.

Three editorial commitments

  1. Independence — no content is written under pressure from advertisers. Opinions on restaurants, hotels and artisans are personal and based on real experience.
  2. Transparency — affiliate links (Booking, GetYourGuide) and partnerships are clearly flagged in every article concerned.
  3. Authenticity — all the photos published on the site are original unless otherwise stated (credits are required for archive images, aerial views and past events).

Eztebe

Eztebe is the Basque form of Stéphane — a deliberate choice to express a deep bond with this land, without having been born with a Basque name. A lifelong lover of the Basque Country, a walker, an amateur photographer (iPhone in ProRAW, Lightroom) and the sole writer behind this project.

The map

The interactive map of the 7 provinces on the home page is adapted from an SVG file on Wikimedia Commons, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike. The project honours this licence by crediting it publicly.

The tech

The site is built with Next.js 15, TypeScript and Tailwind CSS. Content is managed in MDX and hosted on Vercel. It is optimised for speed (Core Web Vitals score of 95+), accessibility (WCAG AA), multilingual SEO (hreflang tags between the Basque, French, Spanish, English and German versions, Schema.org) and social sharing (Open Graph, Twitter Cards).
