Ochagavía in 30 seconds
About 490 inhabitants (488 in 2024, INE), 85 km from Pamplona, in the Salazar valley, surrounded by forests and peaks. The Irati forest is 24 km away: Ochagavía is its eastern gateway.
What to see
Ochagavía village
Billed by the Navarre tourist board as one of the most beautiful villages in the region. Stone Pyrenean houses, where the Anduña and the Zatoya meet. A medieval stone bridge over the Anduña. A fronton (pelota court). A genuine, unspoilt atmosphere.
San Juan Evangelista church
It retains medieval remains (11th century) and parts dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Renaissance altarpieces by Miguel de Espinal.
The Muskilda sanctuary
At the top of Mount Muskilda, at an altitude of 1,025 m. A 12th-century Romanesque hermitage, remodelled in the 17th century. On 8 September, the patronal festival in honour of the Virgin of Muskilda: eight dancers and the ‘Bobo’ perform the traditional dances.
The nature interpretation centre
Over three floors: the nature and way of life of the Salazar valley, the conservation of the Irati forest, geology, fauna and flora, and an ethnographic exhibition of traditional tools. Open all year round.
The Irati forest (Selva de Irati)
24 km away. Covering 17,179 hectares, it is the second-largest beech and fir forest in Europe, after the Black Forest. It stretches between northern Navarre and, on the French side, Soule and Lower Navarre. Trails. The Irabia dam (completed in 1922) — an iconic view. On the Salazar side, the visitor facilities are at the Casas de Irati (23 km from Ochagavía); the forest has three protected areas (the Mendilatz and Tristuibartea nature reserves and the Lizardoia integral reserve) and can be explored on foot, by mountain bike (more than 16 routes), on cross-country skis or on snowshoes (Irati-Abodi centre); the GR 11 runs through it.
Best time to go: October for the autumn colours, July–August to escape the heat.
The Fábrica de Orbaitzeta
A former royal arms factory, on the Orbaitzeta side (Aezkoa valley), the western approach to the Irati forest; Wikipedia links its major expansion project to the reign of Charles III, in the late 18th century.
